Proven Cheek Weld and Accuracy Using This Rest

One of Adrian's biggest issues with most rifles comes by way of not getting a good cheek weld and anchor point. We added the Matthew's Fabrication Cheek Rest to her infamous CVA Cascade and have spent some time at the range to see what we think. COUPON CODE ALSO!

5.0

It's easy to read forum after forum in search of precision shooting techniques and which small breakthrough could make you a better shooter.

The opportunity for advice and different shooting tips can seem almost endless.

How do you decide which ones you should actually listen to? Some of those pointers could cost hundreds of dollars for equipment upgrades, while others just require a little extra discipline on your part. Which one will actually make the biggest difference in your shooting?

Well, there's really only one way to find out. Pick one and get started!

Adrian usually has more of a chin weld than cheek weld.

If you've watched our channel over the past several years, it will likely come as no surprise to you that the main difficulty Adrian has when it comes to shooting a rifle is getting a solid cheek weld. While she always seems drawn to a rifle with an adjustable length of pull - allowing her to find a comfortable position closer to the scope, finding the right anchor point on the cheek piece has proven a little more difficult.

She has steadily been getting more and more picky over which rifles - and most specifically which style stock is on the rifle that she is choosing. We've come to the realization that it is extremely important to have a solid, repeatable cheek weld that puts her right in line with the sight picture.

If she has too much movement to find the sight picture through her scope, it usually has at least a slightly negative impact on accuracy.

While we've tailored our choice of rifles moving forward based on this feature, what about her original .308 CVA Cascade? That is by far one of her favorite rifles and has quite a bit of sentimental value based on its place in Review This Thing history. There have been other cheek risers that have made a difference and provided a more comfortable shooting platform, but we were still looking for the best way to add an adjustable cheek piece to her beloved deer rifle.

Enter, the Matthew's Fabrication Kydex Cheek Rest

According to their website:

The Cheek Rest is your anchor point, so keep it simple. You want it sleek and custom molded to your stock. Your eye needs to be as close to the center horizontally as well as vertically.

My Cheek Riser offers that, plus it makes for a more rock solid cheek weld/mount when the cheek riser is molded to fit your stock.

Matthew's Fabrication Cheek Rest can provide better eye-scope alignment
Specifications:
  • Made from Kydex, a thermoplastic acrylic-polyvinyl chloride polymer
  • Heat molded and designed to fit your stock
  • CNC Machined Cheek Riser with a Hand Crafted Touch
  • Cheek Riser Raises from .125″ to approximately 1.5"
  • Comes in a variety of colors and is even customizable with pre-loaded or custom images

This cheek rest is designed in such a way to give you perfect eye-scope alignment. Adrian, more often that not, has a "chin weld" to be able to see clearly through the scope.

And, it seems that’s a pretty common sentiment among females.

Even with low rings and a lower profile scope, it doesn’t seem to make a difference because it's based more on the stock instead of the scope. So, the Matthew's adjustable cheek rest seeks to solve that problem by raising the cheek comb so you can get a more comfortable and repeatable rest.

Since Matthew's Fabrication designed it in such a way to be easily adjustable, once you find the right position, your eye will easily align with the scope as you get in position on the gun. That way you can have a full and clear field of view as soon as you shoulder the rifle without having move your head around on the stock.

Adrian didn't have it this high, but there's a wide range of adjustment available

That repeatability and proper alignment is also supposed to make you more accurate. Notice I said supposed to. Here’s where we should share a pretty big lesson learned. We were so excited to have the cheek rest adjust up higher on the stock that Adrian may have gotten a little overzealous and raised it too high.

The adjustment was way too different from how she had been shooting, and. truth be told, actually made it less comfortable for her. Accuracy with that CVA Cascade initially suffered. But thankfully, we figured it out and adjusted it down to a much more comfortable position.

Now she is able to relax more when shooting, and the accuracy with that rifle has returned. The nice thing is that it’s so easy to adjust. Just by using the allen wrench, you can move it as many times as you want to find that most comfortable spot.

They also have options with knobs if you don’t have an allen wrench to carry in your range bag.

Installation:

Keep in mind that Matthew's Fabrication has a video with installation instructions on their website, and we would suggest watching that before beginning.

Even though we were a little leery at first because of having to drill into the stock of her gun for installation, we asked the manufacturer and were assured the size holes would not compromise the integrity of the stock.

Holes we drilled in the stock for installation

I followed the instructions from their video and had no difficulty at all. Of course, it's sound advice to measure twice and cut - or in this case drill - once.

So far, it's held up great and, we had no troubles with it even through multiple adjustments and countless trips to the range.

Customizable Options:

The Matthew's adjustable cheek rest comes in a variety of colors as well as customizable options with different graphics.

Color Options:

  • Black
  • Coyote Brown
  • Desert Tan
  • Ranger Green
  • Steel Grey

There is no way I can list all the possible infusible images including camo patterns, flags/patriotic images, and even super hero options. Those possible images can be viewed HERE and make it an even better accessory for your rifle. Not only does it provide a solid anchor point for your shooting form, but it can look good while doing it!

Customized with our logo!

OR, like you see with ours, you can even have them put your custom logo or graphic on it.

Get Your Perfect Fit

Since we're trying to provide you with a solid point of contact to get in the perfect position, the most important thing is to actually order the right one! First you select the rifle you are going to use it on and find your selection from their dropdown menu. If you can't easily find your rifle, I would highly recommend reaching out to them. They will help guide you through the process, ensuring you receive the best product for your rifle

Once you know which stock option to check, the aesthetic choices begin as mentioned above. Then select the cheek rest style (Bear Paw Right, Bear Paw Left, X2, or Classic) which are described on their website as well.

Look back over your choices, place your order, and get ready for the range!

Should I Buy This Thing?

If you've kept reading to this point, it's probably safe to say you're really interested in the Matthew's Fabrication Cheek Rest. But, what will your final decision be? Is this the cheek riser/cheek weld product you've been wanting?

As always, it depends, sort of.

The main reason I would say you may NOT want one is if you really have an aversion to drilling holes into your stock. We didn’t have any problems and haven’t had any issues since installation, but it's your rifle, so that's definitely your call.

If you don't feel comfortable with installation, I would highly recommend getting a gunsmith to help you.

If you still don't feel comfortable, there are some adjustable no-drill cheek rests out there as well.

Adrian is much more comfortable shooting with the cheek rest installed

But, if you have issues getting a good cheek weld, the Matthew's adjustable cheek rest has been fantastic for Adrian. It was really easy to get set up on our CVA Cascade, and the beauty of it is that if you set it up wrong at first, like we did, it easily adjusts to allow for your perfect fit.

Pricing is around $50, with the option to pay extra for the upgrades. Use the COUPON CODE: Review10 to get 10% off your order.

To us, and especially Adrian, it’s well worth $50 to have a sturdy, strong rest that provides improved, easy scope alignment allowing a more relaxed shooting position.

For those reasons, Adrian would have no hesitation giving the Matthew's Fabrication Cheek Rest a 5/5 on the Should I Buy This Thing Scale!
