Is This The BEST Broadhead Target??

It is definitely that time of year. I bet by now you are in full swing, most likely shooting your bow every day that you can. Getting those reps in now is really important to make sure you're ready for opening day.

It is definitely that time of year. I bet by now you are in full swing, most likely shooting your bow every day that you can. Getting those reps in now is really important to make sure you're ready for opening day.

But, are you also practicing with the broadheads you're planning to shoot?

If you aren't, you need to be!

If you're like me, in previous years I would stack up a couple of old layered targets one in front of the other and shoot my broadheads. I was hopeful that shooting into two (sometimes three) old targets would keep the arrow from going all the way through. Thankfully none ever did!

That's what brings us to this week's review: The Delta McKenzie Big 8 Archery Target.

Several months ago now I started shooting at this target. My initial thoughts were that it is well constructed and seems like it will last a long time. One limitation I noticed, however, is that pulling arrows out with field tips on them was not easy compared to other targets I've used.

Could the difficulty pulling arrows out be attributed to the high density foam? And if so, wouldn't that make the target last longer and be much better in the long run? We shall see!

After purchasing an arrow gripper thingy for helping remove the arrows, I've kept shooting and practicing for the upcoming season. I usually try to shoot at least 2-3 days per week throughout the summer, so this target has definitely had a bunch of arrows slung at it.

Now that we're much closer to the season, I've switched over to mainly shooting broadheads.

And wow does this target do great with broadheads!!

They are much easier to remove than field tips. It still requires some force to get them out, but I don't feel the need to use the arrow puller when removing the arrows with broadheads.

Pros & Cons

Pros
  • Great target for broadhead practice
  • Target material seems to be durable
  • Love the handles for carry
  • Easy to take with you to camp or in the field
Cons
  • More difficult field tip removal as compared to a bag target
  • Target spots are painted on and seem to wear off too easily
